Car sales boost state coffers by €129m

The boost in sales of new cars this year has provided €129 million in extra tax revenue to date compared to the same period in 2009.

Some €53 million of this came directly from sales of 13,615 cars bought under the Scrappage Scheme.

In all, 29,000 more new cars have been bought here this year than in the same period in 2009, and 26,000 more new cars have been sold than in all of last year.

The top five brands to benefit from the Scrappage Scheme are Renault, with 18 percent of sales; Ford (14%), Skoda (10%), Volkswagen (9%) and Toyota (9%).

The CO2 Band categories A and B are almost equally split in sales from the scheme.
