Jump in airline site hotels, cars, booking

Air passengers are increasingly using airline websites to book hotels and hire cars, according to a survey taken at major hubs on five continents.

The survey, by key airline IT technology supplier SITA, found that 38 percent of those asked had booked their hotels on the airline sites, up from 21 percent in a similar survey last year. Those hiring cars on the sites had jumped from 19-35 percent.

The seven airport locations in the survey were Atlanta, Beijing, Frankfurt, Johannesburg-Tambo, Mumbai, Moscow Domodedovo and Sao Paulo

Some 71 percent of respondents said they had used online or automatic kiosks for check-in, and there was also a substantial indication that more self-service in passport control and security is wanted.
