Global card for local travel

A universal 'transport card' is in our sooner-than-you-think future is discussions by the transport authorities in America, Australia and Europe come to fruition, writes Brian Byrne.

The specially designed debit or credit card will make it unnecessary for travellers to buy local transport tickets when they move from city to city, or even continent to continent.

The new cards are already slated for use on London's buses and tube systems by the end of 2012.

Other cities in discussions about using the 'contactless payments' system include Paris, New York, Boston, Chicago, Sydney and Manchester.

Meanwhile, the bus and Luas and Dart operators in Dublin still haven't even got their act together for a common ticketing system for our capital city, even though these are commonplace in other major cities around the globe. Even though, literally, tens of millions of euro have been spent on 'studying' the issue.

Third World transport, anyone?
