The long mooted roll-out of privately operated speed vans will take place next month.
The 50 vans will target high risk collision locations, according to the Garda Traffic Division, which will direct the operations of the private company GoSafe.
They say the operator will not have an incentive to catch speeders as they are being paid by hours worked and not by numbers detected.
The tender for the 50 vans was spread amongst five van distributors.
The AA's Conor Faughnan says the Garda will 'have to prove themselves' in the manner they direct the operation. He warned that they shouldn't 'hide vans behind hedges' in a revenue gathering exercise.
