Mercedes-Benz is to produce an S-Class next year powered by a 4-cylinder engine.
The S250CDI is aimed at keeping the brand's flagship competitive in countries using CO2-based taxation.
It is the first time in its 60-year history that the S-Class will have a 4-cylinder motor. The 2.2 diesel will output 204hp and will deliver maximum torque of 500Nm at 1600rpm.
The company says the 2-stage turbocharging used in the engine offers torque equivalent to some of today's 6-cylinder diesels.
