Des proved that age is no barrier to adrenaline seeking as he drove a race prepared Mazda Hatchback around the circuit to complete one of the circuits new 'Mazda3' courses.
Des has been a lifelong car enthusiast having worked most of his life in the Motor Trade and the realisation of his dream was all down to a group of friends who got together to treat the Wicklow pensioner when they heard him say that driving a racing car was one thing he had always wanted to do.
The group of friends said that they were proud to be able to present Des with this opportunity as he was a great friend to them as well as being a tireless community and charity worker.
Des completed a Mazda3 starter course which saw him start off in a classroom before climbing in to the passenger seat for four laps of on-track tuition from his instructor. Following his instructors laps a quick swap to the drivers seat and Des was ready to achieve his ambition with ten timed laps of the track, after which he emerged from the Mazda with a huge smile on his face saying that “it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life and I really appreciate the chance to fulfil my wish”.
The oldest man ever to complete a Mondello Park course was then presented with his certificate of completion which included a breakdown of his lap times as the group of friends who had travelled with him congratulated him on his achievement.
