A new 'eco' tyre from Continental has rolling resistance performance improved by 20 percent over its predecessor, writes Brian Byrne, in just one of a whole range of better characteristics.
The ContiEcoContact5 also offers up to 12 percent better wear, 10 percent better wet braking and 7 percent improved handling.
Noise levels have improved by 2 percent, and the only negative in the performance package is a 2 percent worse rating in aquaplaning.
At the product launch in the Algarve, the company says almost every component of the tyre had been changed. Among the reasons for the substantial improvements are gains in providing ultra light weight, and the design of new adaptive sipes.
The use of new materials in the tyre compound is responsible for a quarter of the improvement in rolling resistance.
Continental has a very strong position in the OEM business among European car manufacturers, with some 30 percent penetration.
