Low emissions engine for new Picanto

Kia's new generation Picanto will be powered by a 998cc 3-cylinder petrol engine when it comes to Ireland at the end of June, writes Brian Byrne.

The 69hp unit has CO2 emissions of 99g/km, and offers acceleration of 14.4 seconds to 100km/h.

The new car is longer than the outgoing version, with an extended wheelbase and improved inside dimensions which provide more front legroom and a 27 percent increase in cargo capacity to 200 litres.

Among the basic fuel efficiency techniques are better aerodynamics than many competitors in the A segment, and a 10kgs reduction in overall weight despite the larger dimensions.

KIA are particularly enthusiastic about the car's braking ability, claiming best in segment.

Standard safety features include an Emergency Stop System which flashes the brakes lights on and off under hard braking.

Full specifications or price haven't been finalised for Ireland yet, but something in the region of €12,000 wouldn't be far off.
