State gets €86m from Scrappage

The Scrappage Scheme which is now in its final weeks has provided some €86m in taxes to the State over the last 17 months, writes Brian Byrne.

The scheme has resulted in a total of almost 27,000 cars sold, with more than 9,000 of these related to 2011.

Scrappage cars have represented 15 percent of new cars sold over the period. The scheme ends on June 30.

The figures released today by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show that almost two thirds of Scrappage sales this year involve just five brands. Toyota leads strongly with 21 percent share, from Renault (15%), Ford (12%), Volkswagen (9%) and Skoda (8%).

January sales had the biggest number of Scrappage cars sold, at 3,013. Just 457 units were sold under the scheme in May.
