EVs cleaner despite power generation CO2 — claim

A electric car being charged on Ireland's current electricity network would be responsible for emissions equivalent to 70g/km, writes Brian Byrne, according to Paul Mulvanney of eCars, the ESB's electric vehicle systems division (he is pictured above on left with Eric Basset, MD of Renault Ireland).

This compares to the current emissions of the Irish car fleet of 140g/km, he said at a special EV workshop organised in Co Kildare today in association with Renault.

He said that a car charged overnight at the moment would be responsible for even less emissions, because there are more renewable sources of electricity in play at night time.

He also said the ESB's plans for changing its energy generation sources will further cut the EV share of emissions in coming years.
