SIMI: Car sales year-to-date 'quite positive'

The seven month figures show that the Irish car market is likely to end up at around 10 per cent higher than last year, writes Trish Whelan.

According to figures provided by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, the year to date figures are still quite positive; with new cars up 10 per cent at 81176 sold so far this year. Sales of light commercials are up by 12 per cent with heavy commercials also up, this time by 3 per cent ahead of last year's figures at this stage.

SIMI's Director General Alan Nolan says 'the overall market remains very fragile'. "The months immediately following the ending of Scrappage were always going to be challenging. However, the year to date figures are still quite positive."

Diesel now represents 71 per cent of all new cars sold (up 22 per cent), while petrol accounts for just 27 per cent of all new cars sold this year (down 8 per cent on last year). Silver is still the most popular car colour.
