A loose pooch can be dangerous in your car

Here's an interesting point concerning people who allow their pooches travel with them in their cars, writes Trish Whelan.

A poll by GEM Motoring Assist in the UK reveals that more than 60 percent of drivers there believe it should be compulsory to restrain dogs in cars when driving.

The company, which also has a road safety arm, wanted to find out driver's views on dogs wearing seat belts or harnesses in cars.

They point out that the potential danger to both pets and passengers should not be ignored.

The consequences of having unrestrained animals in cars in the event of a crash can be severe. If a motorist is traveling at just 30 mph, and an impact occurs, a loose, average-sized dog weighing around 50lbs would be projected forward with a force equal to a baby elephant, according to GEM Motoring Assist's boss.

Imagine, though, trying to put a seat belt or harness on a St Bernard. Would they come big enough?
