Driving in Spain? Be careful

If you think the driving after the night before problem is just an Irish one, think again before you get behind the wheel of your rental car in Spain, writes Trish Whelan.

A recent survey in that country found evidence that up to 17 percent of Spanish drivers drive the next morning after a weekend on the sauce, or having taken drugs.

The survey was carried out by the country’s Traffic Department.

And to compound the danger potential on Spain’s roads, there has been a scary rise in sales of used cars that are more than 10 years old.

In Malaga province alone, a favourite holiday centre for Irish families, 44 percent of the 12,505 used cars sold in the first three months of this year were more than a decade old, and almost a third were between five and ten years old.

The situation is replicated on a national basis according to figures collated by the country’s automotive dealers, who say the recession is the cause.

Finally, one in four cars submitted for their equivalent of the NCT test in Spain are deemed unroadworthy.

Maybe you should just stay on the beach?
