One in 10 'can't afford their cars'

One in ten Irish motorists are not able to afford their car, according to a survey by the Irish League of Credit Unions, writes Brian Byrne.

And 7 percent of respondents to the survey, which covered all aspects of family finances, said they were seriously considering giving up or selling their cars.

A third said they ’will manage’ if fuel prices continue to increase, but say it will be at the sacrifice of other aspects of houselhold spending.

Two thirds of motorists have put off servicing their cars to cut costs, four in ten have switched insurance companies, and 13 percent of respondents said they have dropped rescue cover.

More than eight in ten motorists say they won’t be buying a car in the coming year.
