A 'speed-trap' scheme by a regional radio station over the next three weeks is aimed at congratulating motorists who keep within the limit, writes Brian Byrne.
Athlone-based iRadio, which broadcasts across the midlands, north and west of the country, and also on the internet, will be locating speed-guns in various places and noting motorists who are compliant with the limits.
Then they'll broadcast general details of the cars and locations, and invite the relevant motorists to call in and be part of a draw for prizes of €100. No specific numberplates will be broadcast, but motorists who ring in will have to give their registrations to prove they were driving the cars mentioned.
The scheme, called 'I is the Limit' is in association with the Road Safety Authority and An Garda, kicking off with this weekend's road safety programme.
iRadio's CEO Deborah Fagan emphasises that the speed-guns being used are NOT cameras, and do not record pictures or licence-plate details. The latter are noted by the speed recording crews manually, and the details are destroyed at the end of a specific period.
"We cleared it all with the Data Commissioner beforehand," she told Irish Car+Travel. "It's the first time this kind of scheme has been done here, and we had to be very careful that it is above board."
iRadio broadcasts on 102-104FM in Galway, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo; on 105-107FM in Cavan, Kildare, Laois, Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly and Westmeath; and on 96.9FM in Donegal. It's available at iRadio.ie on the internet.
