80th anniversary of Earhart crossing

This last weekend was the 80th anniversary of the first solo crossing of the Atlantic by a woman, when Amelia Earhart landed in a cow pasture in Ballyarnott, in Derry, writes Brian Byrne.

The famous aeronaut, who subsequently disappeared in mysterious circumstances on a flight over the Pacific, was described as being more hungry than excited when members of the family who owned the landing site, the Gallaghers, went to see who was in the plane.

There's a good account of the episode here.
