Visitors to Donegal and the North West of Ireland can now use a purposebuilt smartphone app to suss out good places and routes—all thanks to a 'transplanted' Swiss hotelier, writes Brian Byrne.
The Green Guide app was developed by Marc Gysling, who runs the Harvey's Point Country Hotel on the shores of Lough Eske with his wife Deirdre McGlone.
Last year they produced a pocket printed 'Green Guide' to the region, but after buying an iPhone Marc realised that many people spend a lot of time using their phones for searching out places and facilities as well as making phone calls.
He developed the Green Guide app with the help of a couple of programmers in Brazil and the Ukraine. Like the printed Guide, it is advertisement free and has some 150 pages of information, pictures and advice for holidaymakers.
The app is free from iTunes, and is standalone, not requiring any data-eating link to the internet once it is downloaded.
Harvey’s Point is the first hotel in Ireland to develop such a comprehensive travel App and has ultimately shown vision and initiative to recognise the massive marketing potential in the rapid global growth of iPhone users.
