Fourth generation Lexus GS launched

The new Lexus GS 450h has launched in Ireland at a starting price of €59,950, writes Brian Byrne.

The new car has a total power output of 345hp and yet is in Band B for Irish tax purposes. Mark Teevan of Lexus Ireland said at the launch that there’s no other car with that ability on the market.

It’s the fourth generation of the GS, and the car introduces the new ’face’ of Lexus. The first generation was launched in Ireland in 1993.

The new car has a substantially improved suspension, offering what the company says is a ’more engaging’ driving experience.

The boot is 55 percent larger than the previous model, thanks in some way to a repackaging of the NiMh battery pack, and though the car is only marginally longer than the outgoing car, there’s significantly more room inside.

The powertrain is a 3.5 V6 petrol with a watercooled electric motor. Lexus says it gives the performance of a V8 with the economy of a four.

A 100km/h speed is achievable in 5.9 seconds, and the economy is the equivalent of 47mpg.

Kevin O'Reilly of Lexus Ireland said the company is forecasting sales of 50 units for this year, and 100 units in 2013, the first full year of sales.

The top of the range Premium grade sells for €76,250.
