Ford has put its new Ecoboost 1.0 petrol Focus on sale in Ireland at a starting price of €21,485, writes Brian Byrne.
Two versions of the 'Engine of the Year 2012' winning power unit are available, with 100/125hp outputs respectively.
The two versions are in Band A for Irish tax terms and offer fuel consumption equivalents of 58.9/56.5mpg.
The 3-cylinder engine will be available in all model variants, and the pricing represents €300 less than the 1.6 diesel which has effectively been the only engine available in the Focus range here. In other markets, it replaces the 1.6 petrol engine.
At the launch today Ford Ireland boss Eddie Murphy said the arrival of the new engine puts Ford in Ireland back into petrol options in a segment where petrol powerplants represent 13.5 percent of sales.
He emphasised that the new engine was 'more than just about fuel economy', citing its performance as a 'punchy and responsive' power unit.
The Ecoboost technology uses a turbocharger to provide high outputs and low end torque.
The new engine will be available later in the new B-MAX, the C-MAX and the Fiesta.
