Electronic horn coming

A US auto components supplier is developing an electronic horn system that will be lighter and customisable, writes Brian Byrne.

The system, from TRW, is likely to debut in a European car some time in 2014.

The electronic horn won't need a pressure activation on the steering wheel boss, but simply will read the movement or positioning of fingers just as computer trackpads do.

The system will also allow the user to customise different horn sounds, such as special ones to indicate 'greetings' rather than warnings.
