Ford has started volume production of its new Fiesta at the company's Cologne assembly plant for deliveries from January, writes Trish Whelan.

The new Fiesta made its public debut at the recent Paris Motor Show.

This latest Fiesta features new smart technologies and a breakthrough powertrain line-up.

Seven powertrain options include both diesel and petrol and deliver fuel economy of sub 100g/km C02; the ECOnetic technology model delivers 87g/km and 3.3 L/100kms; the 1.0 EcoBoost won the 2012 International Engine of the Year award.

The new Fiesta has been given a new exterior and an interior optimised for ergonomics and comfort. It debuts Ford MyKey in Europe which is a Ford-exclusive that allows parents to encourage safer driving and limit their teenager's exposure to risk at the wheel. It also features voice-activated in-car connectivity system SYNC which is also a feature of the new B-MAX recently launched in Ireland. It directly connects you to local emergency services operators after an accident.
