Car sales in January fell by 18.5 percent compared to the same month in 2012, writes Brian Byrne.
In what can only be seen as a disappointing result, the total of new cars registered in the month was 17,299, of which 16 percent were last-minute registrations on January 31, according to Motorcheck.ie.
Volkswagen maintain the top spot with 12.5% of sales, followed closely by Toyota with 10.7% and Ford at 10.6%. Hyundai has moved up to fourth place, and its companion brand Kia has entered the top ten. The Korean brands increased sales respectively by 24 percent and 6.5 percent, and along with BMW (+9.5%) and Audi (+23%) were the only brands in the top ten to register sales increases.
The Ford Focus remains the most popular car in January with 4.8% of the market. The Volkswagen Golf came hot on its heels with 4.7% and Nissan Qashqai sales remain strong with 3.8% of the total sales.
