Long term plug-in hybrid test positive

A three-year plug-in hybrid project carried out in Strasbourg by Toyota showed a 46 percent reduction in fuel consumption from the use of PHEV vehicles over the period, writes Brian Byrne.

The demonstration was done in conjunction with French electricity provider EDF and the City of Strasbourg, and included the provision of private and public charging points around the city.

The project revealed that up to 70 percent reduction in fuel consumption could be achieved for the PHEVs compared to a petrol vehicle of similar size when recharged 1.6 times a day, leading to a substantial estimated saving of €1,400 on an annual basis.

The average cost of a recharge worked out at 30 cents.
