New EcoBoost engine coming

Ford is to offer a brand new 1.5 EcoBoost petrol engine in the next Mondeo in Europe, due at the end of this year, writes Brian Byrne.

Before that it will appear in the Mondeo in China and the Fusion in the US (the Fusion is the US nameplate for the Mondeo).

The new engine will feature some of the technologies developed for the 1.0 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine now used in the Fiesta, Focus and C-MAX, including an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head.

The EcoBoost series of engines use turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing to provide the equivalent power and efficiency of much larger engines.

The range was started in the US in 2009 with a 3.5 litres unit, followed a year later by a 2.0, and subsequently 1.6 and 1.0 versions. The new 1.5 engine was designed in Europe.
