Volkswagen Ireland has come out on top of the registrations for the first quarter of the year, in a car market that is down 13 percent on the same quarter of last year, writes Brian Byrne.
More than half of the todal registrations for the month of March were made in the last five days of the month, according to figures released by Motorcheck.ie, the car history checking specialists.
Volkswagen crossed the quarterly finish line with 4,882 cars registered; a comfortable 747 units ahead of Japanese rival Toyota who came in at 4,135.
With 2,083 units registered, the Volkswagen Golf was responsible for 43 percent of Volkswagen Ireland’s total sales. That placed it ahead of the Nissan Qashqai and Ford Focus in second and third place respectively.
Total sales for 2013 are 39,595 new cars registered against 45,593 for the equivalent period in 2012. The only brands in the Top 10 to show an increase in volumes registered were Hyundai (up 25%), Audi (up 13%) and Kia (up 5%).
Renault, Toyota & Ford suffered the biggest losses with drops of 47 percent, 29 percent and 23percent respectively.
