Scotland is using summer festivals as an important hook to attract visitors, especially to the country's capital, Edinburgh, writes Trish Whelan.

There will be no less than eight individual festivals held in Edinburgh between June and August 2013.

They are the Edinburgh International Film Festival (19-30 June 2013), the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival (19-28 July 2013), the Edinburgh Art Festival (1 August-1 September 2013), the Edinburgh Military Tattoo (2-24 August 2013), the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (2-26 August 2013), the Edinburgh International Festival (9 August-1 September 2013), the Edinburgh International Book Festival (10-26 August), and the Edinburgh Mela Festival (31 August-1 September).

But the country's second city isn't being left out either, and Glasgow’s Merchant City Festival returns this year from 24-28 July 2013. The festival has a five-day programme filled with street art, music, dance, theatre, design, heritage, film, visual art, comedy and food & drink. Highlights for 2013 include Vintage Glasgow which celebrates seven decades of British cool. There is also a dedicated family zone with interactive events, spontaneous performances and fun activities for children and families.

Other key Scottish festivals include the Dundrennan Wickerman Festival (26-27 July 2013), the Environmental Art Festival Scotland (EAFS) also in Dumfries & Galloway and is brand new for 2013 from 30 August-2 September 2013, and the East Neuk music and arts Festival in Fife, which runs from 3-7 July 2013.
