The Association of European Carmakers (ACEA) says the 2015 target date for the proposed Europe-wide automatic emergency call system is 'highly ambitious', writes Brian Byrne.
The eCall system will be mandatory in all new cars when the relevant Directive is implemented, but the carmakers are concerned that the system's technical specifications have not yet been finalised.
ACEA Secretary General Ivan Hodac also says the EU lawmakers haven't taken into account the 3-year lead time which the industry will need to provide the systems when the specifications are agreed.
But ACEA welcomes the principle behind eCall, saying it will help save lives by shortening response time for emergency services getting to a crash.
