The lack of any regulation on the sale of part-worn tyres in Ireland was slammed this week by the new boss of Continental Tyres Ireland, writes Brian Byrne.
Tom Dennigan said that between 10-20 percent of tyres sold here are now part-worn, and there's no way of policing quality or history.
He contrasted this to the situation in the UK, where part-worn tyres must have a vulcanised badge on the side to show that they are part-worn.
Many such tyres are imported in bulk from mainland Europe countries, and sold for attractively low prices here. But the reason they are available is because other countries have more stringent regulations on tyres than pertain here.
