Drivers ignore tiredness advice

Half of drivers regularly ignore advice on staying alert at the wheel, a survey in the UK has revealed, writes Brian Byrne.

The research by road safety charity Brake in association with Direct Line insurance found that 55 percent of drivers who responded don't take rest breaks every two hours as recommended.

And one in ten don't take rests at all on long journeys.

Men are the worse offenders, especially on really long trips of six hours or more.

In the UK driver tiredness is estimated to cause one in five deaths on trunk roads.
