The growing practice of service station forecourts charging people for the facility to check their tyres' pressures has been criticised, writes Brian Byrne.
Tom Dennigan, the new boss of Continental Tyres Ireland, said it's a bad practice from a safety perspective as people feel disinclined to pay a euro or two after having already spent money on expensive fuel.
He also expressed concern that the growing availability of tyre pressure monitors on new cars might result in even less regular inspection of tyres, as owners expect the car to do it for them.
He was speaking at the presentation of a survey of car tyres condition and pressures recently carried out by Continental and Maxol.
