A BlueMotion ultra-frugal version of the 7th generation Golf will be arriving on the Irish market towards the end of the year, writes Brian Byrne.
Although there's no current tax advantage in the 85g/km CO2 emissions which will be the selling point of the car, Volkswagen Ireland is confident that the 88mpg-plus fuel consumption will attract attention.
They're also suggesting that the Irish Government has a 'habit' of changing CO2 goalposts and that in the future there will be tax incentives for the BM Golf.
The car features a 15mm lower ride height, a special roof spoiler, lateral air guide elements on the rear window, a masked front grille, partially closed air inlet screens, optimised cooling system airflow, special underfloor panels, optimised brake cooling channels and a C-pillar spoiler.
The 1.6-litre 110bhp TDI is from Volkswagen's new engine series and allows peak torque from 1,500-3,000rpm.
