The Renault Scenic is holding firmly onto its top placing in the European sales of compact MPVs, writes Brian Byrne.

With some 60,240 units sold in the first half of the year, it is substantially ahead of Ford's C-MAX with 53,487 and VW's Touran at 49,136 units.

Opel sold 42,345 copies of its Zafira in the period, while Citroen's C4 Picasso came out in fifth place with 40,998 units.

A new version of the C4 Picasso is due next month and the company is aiming for the top spot in the MPV league.

In the Irish context, the Peugeot 3008/5008 is tops, with 354 units, followed by Ford's C-MAX at 245, Citroen's C4 Picasso at 197, Opel's Zafira at 146 and Renault's Scenic with 83. These figures represent both 5- and 7-seat variants and are extracted from registration figures at Motorcheck.ie.
