Easing up, Frankfurt Day 2

Well, the second press day can be taken at a more relaxed rate, but there's still so much to see in a place this big, write Brian Byrne and Trish Whelan from the Frankfurt Motor Show. So here's a selection of some of today's stuff.

Ford's showcar for the Frankfurt event was this S-MAX Concept, which shows a new front treatment to bring the model into line with the latest style ethos of the company. There have also been significant upgrades to the interior.

A better view of the Kia Niro Concept than we were able to show you from the pre-show reveals. Nissan's Juke is the target.

Renault used Frankfurt to launch their Initiale Paris high quality and exclusive cars initiative. The vehicle to bring it on is this concept for the next generation Espace.

Drop dead gorgeous ... both of them. No matter how many times we have seen the Alfa Romeo 4C in concept and production form, we simply can't walk by without a look and a snap.

Without doubt, one of the stars of our show, maybe THE star? The Volvo Coupe Concept recalls the glory days of the P1800 of the 60s, and they show one up at the back of the stand. We say, build it, Volvo, and they will come and buy.

We have all noticed that in-car screens are getting that bit bigger, but this is ridiculous ... the screen in the Tesla Type S saloon from the electric carmaker is just gigantic. Distraction potential must be proportionally higher, we think.

We mentioned the BMW i3s swishing around the grounds of the Messe yesterday. Just to give you a little more on them, this view shows the really nice wood and leather trim which is one of the options. Note the rear-hinged back doors, easing access for larger people in an efficient space.

This is Lamborghini's Gallardo Squadra Corse, with a 570hp 5.2 V10 capable of powering it to 100km/h in some 3.5secs. It will be a limited edition, with a price in the range of $254,000. That would limit it, all right.

A Honda Civic Type R is currently in development for production in 2015. The company is planning to make it the fastest FWD car around Nurburgring before that. Meantime, visitors to the Honda stand can drool over this WRC version of the humble Civic.

For the family with a rugged outlook, and appreciate the inherent strengths of VW's iconic Caddy Van, this Cross Caddy is a choice that a significant number of non-commercial motorists choose across Europe. We're too much on the snobby side in Ireland, we think.

Skoda's offering for the show, and for production, is the Rapid Spaceback. No, it's not a wagon variant, just a slightly larger hatchback. The same powertrains as its sibling and many VW cousins, if offers yet another option for the family car buyer.

This is Citroen's C-Cactus Concept, with a couple if intriguing if off-the-wall ideas like the padded squares on the door panels to protect against dinging. We'll see elements of this style theme first in production in the next generation C4, due next year.
