Frankfurt 2013, the night before

It's time again for the biggest Motor Show in the world, write Brian Byrne & Trish Whelan, and today we're going to bring to you live a taste of glitter and style from Frankfurt's IAA 2013.

It got going yesterday with a number of pre-show press days events, kicking off with the reveal of Opel's stunning Monza Concept, designed to show some of the style direction of future models from the German carmaker.

Opel says it's their vision of interface between human and machine. With some extraordinary thoughts in new ways of providing and displaying information. One sidelight idea that came from that reveal is an app as car manual, where the owner of a smartphone can point its camera at any part of a car and all the info on it will come up in text, pictures and video instruction.

Hyundai's new generation i10 changes the game in the little car that's already leader in the, admittedly small, small car segment in Ireland. Longer, lower and wider, it will be on sale in January, but Hyundai Ireland's Stephen Gleeson will have LHD demonstrators in every showroom in the coming months, and expects to double sales of the model in 2014.

Across town, Kia offered a pre-show glimpse of its new Soul, which will star at the main event with the KED-10 Concept, a look at what might be coming down the road as a competitor for the Nissan Juke, itself very successful in the European marketplace.

But last night was relatively easy for the journalists massed in this German city. Today comes the foot-wearying tramp through the many halls of the Messe. We'll show you what we see as the day goes on.
