Electric car acceleration record broken

An electric car has hit a new acceleration record for its kind in the Netherlands, writes Brian Byrne.

It was achieved by students at the Delft University of Technology whose home-built car reached 100km/h in 2.15 seconds, solidly smashing the previous record of 2.68 seconds.

The 320lb racer features four electric motors, one each wheel, with a combined output of 132hp.

The structure is a carbon fibre reinforced plastic monocoque. The team picked their smallest member, 24-year-old Marly Kuijpers, to pilot their record attempt.
