SKODA has expanded the Rapid range with the arrival of the new Spaceback which will go on sale later this month, writes Trish Whelan.
This is the first SKODA hatchback to compete in the high-volume compact segment. The family hatchback segment accounts for almost 19 percent of all cars sold in Ireland.
It retains similar levels of space and versatility to the Rapid saloon, but measures 18 centimetres less than that car. SKODA say it has the largest legroom and best rear headroom in its segment. Boot volumes at 415 litres, or 1,380 with the rear seat folded down, are among best in the segment.
Three trim levels are: Active, Ambition and Elegance. Air conditioning and 15-inch alloy wheels come as standard with Ambition while the Elegance gets 16-inch wheels and climate control.
Priced from €17,495, Spaceback is priced €200 below the Rapid Saloon on petrol models and will cost the same as the saloon for diesel versions.
Buyers can choose from petrol or diesel engines ranging from 86bhp to 122bhp. They are a 1.2 petrol (€200 Road Tax) interestingly expected to be the volume seller. There's also a 1.2 105bhp petrol (€270 Road Tax) and a 1.4 TSI petrol with 122bhp (€280 Road Tax) that uses the 7-speed DSG double clutch automatic gearbox. The diesel uses the 90bhp 1.6 TDI engine (€200 Road Tax) in either manual or DSG transmissions. Prices start from €19,495.
Spaceback will go on sale as part of the Czech brand's Open Week event from Tuesday 29 October - Saturday 2 November when customers will be given a free 3-year service plan with every Rapid order taken and for early orders satellite navigation and cruise control are provided for €249. SKODA Dealers are providing finance from 1.9% APR.
