Porsche is celebrating the world premier of the all-new Macan, a model that sees the German sports carmaker expand its range in to a whole new vehicle segment, writes Trish Whelan.

The Macan will arrive in Porsche Centres in the UK and here in Ireland from April 2014.
It brings proven Porsche values of maximum acceleration and braking performance, vast engine power, extreme agility and optimum steering precision for the first time to the compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment. As well as a high level of comfort and versatility.
The Macan S is powered by a 3.0 V6 bi-turbo engine that delivers 340hp, accelerates from 0-100km/h (62mph) in 5.2 seconds and returns up to 32.5mpg. The 3.6 in the Macan Turbo produces 400hp and takes just 8 seconds for the same trip, with an average fuel consumption of up to 31.7mpg. With a turbocharged 3.0 V6 diesel engine and 258hp, the Macan S Diesel is the long-distance runner of the three Macan models. The 3.0 engine accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and returns an average of 46.3mpg. Top speed is 143mph.
The car is produced at the Leipzig factory in German where Porsche has invested €500 million in the plant and an entirely new production line which can produce around 50,000 vehicles per year.
The top model in the range is the Macan Turbo powered by a 3.6 bi-turbo engine, used in a Porsche model for the first time. It achieves 400hp and catapults the car from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds.
UK prices are from £43,300 to £59,300. Irish prices are not to hand, but the Macan is available to order here from today.
