A Christmas and New Year safety campaign launched today by the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána is focusing on serious head injuries from road collisions.
According to the National Neurosurgery Centre at Beaumont Hospital, one in seven of the 250 heat trauma transfers to the hospital every year is a result of a road collision. Also, vulnerable road users (motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists) represent 70 percent of admissions as a result of road collisions
Gay Byrne, Chairman, Road Safety Authority, says head injuries can be devastating to the individual, their families and their communities. He added that the RSA message this year is the same as always — slow down, wear your seatbelt, never ever drink or drug drive, wear high visibility clothing if you’re out walking or on your bike.
An Garda says it will be increasing enforcement activity over the Christmas period, and there will be a number of safety initiatives targeting vulnerable road users — pedestrians and cyclists.
Earlier this week, the Road Safety Authority partnered with Drink Aware and An Garda Síochána to remind all drivers to remember the ‘Morning After’ when they are out celebrating over the Christmas period, highlighting the length of time it takes for the body to process a standard drink.
