Fiat to use Alfa for profitability

Fiat is to use a revitalised Alfa Romeo to bring its European operations to profitability, writes Brian Byrne.

The company's boss Sergio Marchionne says also that in the future, Alfa models will not share engines with Fiat cars.

He was speaking following the purchase announced by the Italian carmaker of the remaining 41 percent of Chrysler controlled by the US Automotive Workers Union.

Marchionne added that the Lancia brand will in the future be sold only in Italy. The Fiat brand strategy is already well announced as concentrating on Panda and 500 models.

The Fiat boss also reiterated that Alfa Romeo will not be sold to Volkswagen, who are known to have wanted the brand for some time.

A full strategy announcement will be made in April.
