More weather warnings for motorists

Drivers are being urged to take extra care on roads across the country over the next couple of days as further storms come in from the Atlantic, writes Brian Byrne.

The Road Safety Authority issued the appeal as Met Eireann upgraded its weather level to orange this morning, forecasting widespread further gales and coastal flooding.

Water lying on roads in other parts of the country also pose a serious hazard, especially on small country roads where drivers might come across them unexpectedly while rounding bends.

The public is advised to check weather reports and heed any advice from local councils and An Garda Síochána regarding road conditions.

Drivers are asked to remember that it takes longer to stop a vehicle on wet roads so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front, four seconds at a minimum (use the 2 second rule and repeat it twice).

Control of a vehicle may also be affected by strong cross winds. High sided vehicles and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to strong winds.
