Nissan drops diesel for London cab

The dirty and noisy diesels of the London black cab are on the way out, as far as Nissan is concerned, writes Brian Byrne.

A new version of the taxi for London will use a 1.6 petrol engine, with a promise that overall it will be more environmentally friendly than diesels.

Nissan has designed its cab around the NV200 van, which is also the basis of the new cab of choice in New York City.

A special style for the front end of the London cab will give it a very distinctive appearance from any other NV 200 vehicles.

The new taxi has been developed by Nissan's European design centre in London, which has also designed the Qashqai and Juke car models.
