Multitrip.com travel insurance provider, has revealed details of their 2013 travel insurance claims. While most of the claims were standard - such as lost baggage or a cancelled flight - others were somewhat odd.
Among these includes the story of a person who attempted to seek compensation from their airline after a spider appeared on their jacket during their flight. Following the flight, the person complained that airline staff refused to look for the spider hence causing them to suffer traumatic stress.
More recently, Multitrip.com have seen high profile claims in excess of €100,000 - many of which were due to medical issues. 42% of claims during 2013 were for medical assistance.
Here are the top ten reasons that people claimed travel insurance during 2013:
1. Medical Assistance: 42%
2. Reimbursement of the cancellation expenses of trip: 26%
3. Compensation due to problems with personal belongings: 12%
4. Indemnity due to transport departure delay: 4%
5. Indemnity due to problems with luggage & belongings: 4%
6. Early return due to serious family matter: 3%
7. Medical Transport: 2%
8. Loss of connections due to delay of transportation: 2%
9. Urgent Dental Treatment: 1%
10. Replacement of cash: 1%
It was recently revealed that 28% of people still travel without insurance. Commenting on this statistic, Ciaran Mulligan, Managing Director of Multitrip.com said, 'The fact that 28% of people travel on holidays without travel insurance is worrying, given that over the past number of years we have seen an increase in claims in excess of €100,000. Why take that chance?' He continued, 'For the price of a few pints, people can make sure that they are covered against a holiday disaster that is outside of their control.'
