BMW i8 hybrid sportscar here in July

BMW's new i8 will go on sale here in July this year with a starting price of €136,430 OTR, writes Trish Whelan. It is the most advanced sports car ever offered for sale by the marque.

The 2+2 seater is a plug-in hybrid that uses a three-cylinder highly turbocharged petrol engine with a 1.5 capacity in conjunction with an electric motor to provide searing acceleration. It takes just 4.4 seconds for the 0-100km/h sprint and has a top speed of 250km/h. Total horsepower is 362 and combined torque 570 Nm. Yet combined fuel consumption stands at 135mpg (2.1 litres per 100kms), and C02 emissions come in at 49g/km. The rear wheels are driven by the petrol engine via a six-speed automatic transmission while the front wheels get their power from the electric motor.

The i8 comes as standard in Ireland with AC Charging which sees a 3.7kW charge power up the car's battery from zero to 80 percent within two hours. This can be performed by the optional BMW iWallbox. Other 'renewable' power options will be offered via selected BMW i partners, for emission-free home charging. AC Charging is the most widespread public charging option here. Public charging is currently provided free of charge in Ireland.

The i8 will come with a standard 10amp/2.4kW five metre charging cable to enable charging from a 3-pin socket with a zero to 80 percent charge in under three hours.

The price includes SEAI grant of €5,000 and VRT Relief of €2,500 due to the car's zero emissions powertrain, for a private customer. For a commercial buyer, VRT relief of €2,500 applies but the SEAI grant is €3,800. In Ireland, Joe Duffy is the exclusive BMW i agent and will look after all sales and servicing needs of the BMW i8.
