A driver's reaction times when talking on a hands-free phone are increased by 50 percent in normal conditions, writes Brian Byrne. And they are 30 percent worse than if the driver was at the drink-driving limit.
That's the foundation for a call by a leading UK road safety charity for a total ban on phone use while driving. The Brake organisation says it's the conversation is the distracting factor that increases the likelihood of an accident four-fold.
