Experimental 'glowing' highway
A 500-metre stretch of highway in The Netherlands has been marked with 'glow in the dark' paint to test the efficiency of a concept that could save on lighting at night, writes Brian Byrne.
The system uses a special 'dynamic' paint made with a photo-luminising powder that absorbs energy in daylight and releases it as a glow at night.
It's part of the testing of a collaborative concept by Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans Infrastructure which imagined 'smart' highways complete with glow markings, interactive lighting and an induction priority lane for electric vehicles which would extend the range of EVs.
