'Cyber-physical' is the term used for computer operated features such as applying brakes in an emergency via modern safety systems.
Security researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek also highlighted the Bluetooth stacks, radio data systems, and the telematics in modern cars as 'attack surfaces' through which hackers could interfere with cars.
The pair also noted that the potential danger was arguably worse than hacking a computer or a phone, as physical injury could ensue if an accident occurred because of the hacking.
The researchers have produced a 92-page report on their findings, which are based on publicly-available information on automotive systems in use or in development.
The trend towards offering internet access in cars is also making the danger more likely, they say.
