Citroen's C4 Cactus is selling so well that the company, PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, has had to add extra production shifts at its Villaverde factory near Madrid, writes Trish Whelan.
Daily production is expected to grow by 20 percent as the model is fully rolled out across Europe. The Villaverde plant has an annual capacity of 200,000 units.
Citroen is targeting the C4 Cactus at compact car buyers seeking a utilitarian vehicle with low running costs. The car has protective panels on the doors and bumpers called Airbumps that absorb small impacts.
Citroen reduced development costs for the car by using a stretched version of the platform that underpins the smaller C3 and Peugeot 208 subcompacts.
Citroen sales in Ireland are currently up more than 9 percent compared to last year. Sales of their commercial vehicles are up 36 percent. The five-door C4 Cactus is on sale here now with prices from €17,795-€23,845.
