Cycle path gathers solar energy

Cyclists in the Netherlands are now pedalling on an experimental stretch of cycle path that's made from solar panels, writes Brian Byrne.

The panels are embedded in concrete, and covered with a toughened and dirt-cleaning glass surface.

At some 230 feet long, the SolarRoad is part of a €3m programme looking at the practicality of alternative energy sources. The eventual 330-feet stretch will provide enough power to give energy to three households, according to the project managers.
