The very dangerous activity of running red lights will become a bit more costly to drivers from today, writes Brian Byrne.
That's because it is one of the offences for which the number of penalty points have been increased from today.
In all, points are to be increased for nine motoring offences and a further 14 offences will attract penalty points for the first time.
Learner permit holders driving unaccompanied or failing to display an L plate, will now attract two penalty point, as will failure by novice drivers to display an N plate.
Penalty points have also been increased for dangerous overtaking, and failure to stop a vehicle before a stop sign.
