Volvo is well into development of a new 3-cylinder petrol engine which will be used in its compact cars — the next V40 as well as a forthcoming XC40 crossover — and will also see service in V60 and XC60 models, writes Brian Byrne.
Though no details are available, the configuration works best at 1.2 litres and below, so it's likely to emulate in size current offerings from Ford, VW and Mercedes-Benz in this configuration.
It is reported though that power outputs of up to 180hp will be available from the unit, which will be lightweight and very efficient.
